How does a solar collector system work?
With a solar collector, we are able to collect and use the sun's heat. From the system's standpoint, the other system units are as important as the collector itself.
Inside the collector, most often an anti-freeze fluid circulates, which passes its heat through a heat exchanger to the desired medium (domestic hot water, pool water, heating element, etc.). This is needed, since our system is used year round, hence it's used at sub-freezing temperatures. The collector is operated with the help of heat sensors and pumps connected through a control panel, obviously with an eye to gain the greatest amount of energy from the source.
What auxiliary units are needed for a well-functioning solar collector system?
It follows from the above and from the functionality of the system, that the following sub-units are needed: solar collector, insulated pipes, pump(s), expansion tank, solar buffer, electronic controller. It's crucial for operation of the system that the sub-units work in harmony and are of sound quality.
How much energy do we save using a solar collector system?
The sun shines less in the winter than in the summer. For this precise reason, 100% energy savings can only be achieved at a very high cost (we'd need a system capable of storing the generated hot water for weeks or months). Therefore, solar systems are designed for optimal efficiency, which means that in the summer we can substitute 95% of the hot water requirements, whereas in the winter that number drops to 35%. This translates to an annual 60-70% energy savings with regard to domestic hot water.
It is far more difficult to estimate how much a solar collector system contributes to a heating system, since this is a function of the thermal properties of the builidng. Average savings is around 35-40%.
